Because of it’s popularity it makes it a prime target for online attacks. Although you should secure all your applications you should be more deligent with highly popular applications since these seem to be more highly targeted by attackers because of there stronger knowledge and easy to find security holes.

The first and most critical thing to be aware of when running any online application is making sure the os, web server and database are being patched and upgraded on a regular basis. In addition the wordpress application should be patched modules and core application often.

After basic security practices the next focuses should be this file system permissions and accesses should be secured.

Notes to referrer to:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

Basic steps are as follows:

Make sure file are secured as outlined in the hardening guide.
simplespiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06199801103545676881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76153604311596173.post-81934840776009191162016-03-17T14:14:00.001-07:002016-03-17T16:21:51.763-07:00Standard Post Linux Install Steps
After installing a new test server for home use. Railo allows you to use the features you use when developing cold fusion applications without running the Adobe ColdFusion Server. There are multiple reasons you may use Railo, two common reasons are reduced licensing costs and open source support. Railo was reversed engineered from the existing Cfml language so almost all mark up language avaiable in cfml run on Adobe CF is available on Railo.

Requirements:
Install Oracle Linux 7 or comparable linux.
Standard Post Linux Install Steps.

Downloads:
Download Railo (Current Version 4.2.1.008)

Tools Required:
sftp client – Recommended Fillezilla
ssh client – Recommended SecureCrt($99 per year), Optional Putty (Free)

1. I should be complete with the first tutorial in the next few days. The first tutorial shows a beginning user how to install Oracle database 11g on Linux 7. These series includes instructions for the virtual system, database, dns server, a separate file server, and a public repo all using Oracle Linux software. This new tutorial will replace outdated tutorials provided on several of my other sites, both here and on sa-oracle.snapdedo.com, and oracle.snapdedo.com. No update has been received as to what exactly they did to resolve the problem, but it is clear that only Google made a change no update was required on Windows Live Writer. My guess is they reenabled ClientLogin and OAuth on their servers.
For how long can we expect Google to accept the old less secure communications. Google announced the deprecation of these components as early as 2012. In April Google made it very clear that they were going to shutdown ClientLogin and similar components, but Microsoft is no longer maintain Windows Live Writer. Will Microsoft open source this product or apply a new patch set for it’s legacy users is still unknown.
We can say that this is was a Google issue, but the reality is that we can not expect the software giant to not secure its apps, instead we should expect that it delivers secure communications. What would be nice is if Google’s giant development team could support the effort of building a strong blog editing client, or updating a couple of the most popular ones since it’s own editing tool has never had any popularity. Google could try to force users down the path of using the tool, but the tool is slow and clumsy even though it has the features required to post blogs.
Let’s hope for an update both from Microsoft, Zoundry and a few other of the popular editing tools.
simplespiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06199801103545676881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76153604311596173.post-3188984586362517512015-06-01T16:04:00.001-07:002015-06-01T16:19:01.175-07:00Windows Live Writer Blogger Bug Work Around 3Almost a week after Google updated app security Windows Live Writer is still not connecting correctly to Blogger. Every other Windows base blog editor is still failing also. There are signs that the Google and Microsoft are working together to solve this issue, but unfortunately the fixes do not include posts with images and many users are still having issues posting in general. At this time I can post without images but as soon as I add images my posts fail with the same error. I have posted two work arounds already but yesterday a reader gave me the ultimate work around. This workaround works well but has many steps to get set up. Hopefully a solution is found soon but if your one of the user who can’t wait in hope for a solution follow along below for a solution that will allow you to publish with Windows Live Writer to Blogger and still maintain images and hyperlinks.
Note this workaround includes creating free accounts with WordPress and a service called ITFFF. We will not be using WordPress for our blog just to hold the content while ITFFF pushes it to blogger.
I have completed several very complex posts using this method and all features worked as expected.
Remember this set up is fairly lengthy but once this is working it will save you a lot of time.Step 1. Create a Free WordPress account. (Again this is not moving to WordPress we will just use WordPress to hold the content while it moves to Blogger).WordPress Sign Up

Create a new Account, Choose No thanks I’ll use the free address.

You’ll notice a create blog lower on the screen now.

Take the steps to create a blog, None of the information matters you’ll just need the username and password to connect to Blogger.
Again none of the options matter you will be using WordPress to hold the posts only.

Step 5. Tell ITFFF.com to move posts from WordPress to your Blogger account.
Choose Browse to find your rule to move the posts.

I now have a job that will move my WordPress posts to blogger if I click the run button.

Step 6. Last step I now just need to tell Windows Live Write to post to my WordPress account. This is very simple.
In Windows Live Write Choose Manage Blogs.

Choose Add

Choose WordPress

Enter the WordPress info you created in previous steps username password and url.

Choose no to the theme we don’t care about the wordpress theme.

Give this new blog a name that’s easy to remember so when this is fixed we can remove it.

Step 7. Close Windows Live Writer and open it again to see your new blog settings.

Step 8. Publish to the WordPress account. Click Publish

Step 9. Wait a few minutes then sign into ITFFF.com and push the run move job button. Under My recipes.
I don’t know how quickly this will run on it’s own but you can make it automatic by clicking the run button.

This should run pretty fast I created this post with atleast 15 images and it only took a few minutes for me to see it in Blogger

Let me know your experiences or if there is something I can improve on this how to guide.

To the joy of many users a notice was sent that these two applications were once again talking to each other. After a quick test post I to was happy. Surprise after trying to publish a full post I found the reality was only a partial fix. Any posts with images instantly failed with either the notfound error or the username error once again. This does give me hope through that Google and Microsoft are working together to resolve this issue. In the meantime I will be doing a work around three thanks to a commenter on one of my posts that will allow for both content, images and hyperlinks to all show up in blogger while using windows Live writer. It takes a little work initially but once set up it works amazingly. Watch for Work Around 3 post some time later this evening, if the fix does not come out sooner.simplespiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06199801103545676881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76153604311596173.post-29379632523768536372015-06-01T12:31:00.001-07:002015-06-01T14:20:41.405-07:00JXplorer Searching Your AD RepoJXplorer is a simple tool to work with Ldap or Active Directory Servers. If you are a developer like me you may have come across the need to test ldap connectivity with your application. Being able to see your ldap information and understand what truly is listed for the testing user is important. JXplorer is an excellent tool for Windows to allow you to view users and their current configuration. Here you can check if a user is in an expected group and shorten your work time researching failures that are truly based on account configuration.
Here’s a quick example of how to do a quick test to verify a users configuration against a Windows Active Directory Server.
Why is this helpful? If your on a team were development is separate from Active Directory Management you may lack the tools to see your AD repository. At the same time you may be required to configure your application or users based on their Active Directory configuration. Although you may have requested a specific configuration from the team that supports AD you may find that this configuration is not what you were looking for or was misconfigured. As a developer you can spend hours researching and troubleshooting applications that had no issue other then a misconfiguration in the AD settings for an individual user or a whole team. There are many tools to search AD configuration, some of these tools are command line and cumbersome to learn. JXplorer is a graphical tool that is quick to learn for the average developer and takes almost no AD experience to understand.
1. Download & Install JXplorerJXplorer Download
This is a standard windows install so no real explanation needed here.
2. Start JXplorer in “Start,Programs”
Create a new connection.

Enter your Active Directory Connection Information

Choose to save this as a template to speed up entry in the future.
4. Run a search from JXplorer, Change fields you want to search from from address, to name or additional fields, change operator type to like or exact match and enter your search criteria.
Change the view to see all information by choosing the “Simple.html” format
5. From the simple.html view you can scroll down to see User Account information, such as SamAccount info or Groups for the user.
There’s many other things you can do with JXplorer but basic look ups are a good place to start with a developer to help troubleshoot configuration issues.
Good Luck

So not only does it look like Google has blocked out Windows Live Writer (WLW) but it also looks like it has broke many other popular blog editors. While testing a solution for the Windows Live Writer Blogger connectivity issue, I started testing the other most popular Windows based blogging tools. If your not aware in April Google announced it's deprecations of several less secure authentication tools. Tools that did not updated to OAuth 2 would fail. This change seems to have taken effect lat in May and hundreds of blogger users have been fighting through the disruption of their editing tools. My first assumption was that this would only impact Windows Live Writer since they had not updated the tool in many years. As I tried to find a reasonable alternative I was unable to find another blog editor that was currently working. I have tried several but can find little information on the issue from any vendors. I do not see anyone actively working to solve their tools issue. I do have a work around posted but it is poor to say the least. Here's what I found when testing Scribefire a popular blog editing plugin for Firefox and Chrome.
When connecting my account I received a "Blogger isn't playing nicely; it's giving ScribeFire an error". If you would like more information on this issue see my post entitled "Can't publish to Blogger".
I will not usually share a web server or database server on a single server but I have found that these other application can share a small single instance and help my productivity working in my home network. I can build two different internal dns servers and run them easily on two small virtual boxes on two different low end machines. this keeps redundancy but is not necessary. This method will combine Windows Live Writer and Windows Live Mail to upload the content. This method is similar to the first method in that you will continue to use Windows Live Writer to design and layout your content. However after you have completed design you will use Windows Live Mail to post the images and content to your blog.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">If you’re facing the issue of being able to post with Windows Live Writer to your blogger account like so many other users, here’s one workaround. My previous posts describe the issues and what’s being done. Although there are multiple ways to work around the “Windows Live Writer will not connect to Blogger” Issue the most common seems to be designing in Windows Live Writer and posting the blog with html into the blogger browser application. Here’s a quick tutorial on how that would work.
1. Create your blog with text and images using Windows Live Writer.<span style="color: #2288bb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #2288bb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">
2. Grab the source of your blog from windows Live writer. Use Ctrl+A to copy all of the source from the source screen in Windows Live Writer.<span style="color: #2288bb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #2288bb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">
3. If you’re one of the many Windows Live Writer users who found themselves stumped, when you could no longer publish to blogger, you’re not alone. Many Windows Live Writer users were disappointed when they found that towards the end of May it would no longer connect to Blogger. This was a planned change by Google. Although Google officially Announced the deprecation of the tools required for Windows Live Writer in April the first impact was seen roughly on May 25 to May 27th. Google deprecates components necessary for Windows Live Writer and several other blog editors. In the past there have been work arounds to this issue, like enabling less secure apps in your Google security configuration. This is no longer the case.

Unfortunately Windows Live Writer is no longer a supported product from Microsoft. There is a possibility that Microsoft opens the source to open source community to allow the continued development of the product, but even if this occurs it will be months before we would see a resolution to this issue.

Hopefully Google steps in and fixes this issue in the meantime to allow blog writers to continue to use one of the most popular blog editors available.

Unfortunately the Google blogger interface is not well designed for an active writer. So I will continue to research until I find a good alternative and post when I do. Many of the other alternatives available have similar issues. A quick workaround is to connect your email account to outlook or similar email client which has a rich text editor and continue to post through emails. A feature blogger has made available for many years.

There is some news that Google and Microsoft are working together to provide a solution. It sounds like it will be a two part solution an update from Google followed by an update to Windows Live Writer to the new OAuth method google is now enforcing.

Several temporary workarounds exist.

1. Use you windows live writer tool to develop your content then view html and upload to your blogger account through the blogger web page. You'll still need to manually load your images but the content itself should be intact. I'll post some on using this method in a separate post shortly.

2. Another method is to hook outlook up to one of your email accounts and use the rich text editor to email the content and upload images to blogger. This may be more appealing to many since your images will also be uploaded. Advanced features however will not exist in your email client.

3. Use bloggers web post tools to post. Although this tool is fairly basic and missing many features a true writer needs it works as a temporary solution.

I've tested a few other tools and they seem to be in a similar position. Firescribe for one does not want to connect as well.

What's happened to google response time? Amazing in the last few days each query types into google search box seems to go slower and slower. It's obvious they are making upgrades from the content we see and the security changes that have occurred in the last few days. If this continues there will be a lot more Bing users. Bing Search Engine not a bad replacement for slow searches.simplespiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06199801103545676881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76153604311596173.post-48048436299998928232015-05-28T20:48:00.002-07:002015-05-28T20:48:45.273-07:00May 28th Google blocks auth method used by Windows Live writer
If you noticed today that you can no longer access your blogger account through Windows Live Writer, you're not the only one. It looks like today May 28th 2015 Google has made some modifications and has officially stopped allowing the communication Windows Live Writer is using to post blog posts.
Currently you will need to use either a different blogging tool or bloggers web dashboard to update your content.
Additional Info Blogger Returned the Following Error: NotFound: Not Found
Checking passwords and many other things to no avail until I found this information hopefully Google or Microsoft works this out although Windows Live Writer is a deprecated tool and we may not see an update from Microsoft.

This seems to most commonly happen when publishing a large post with many graphics to a blogger site. Republishing the post multiple times almost always resolves this. I have found that I may need to publisher the post 4 to 5 times if I have over a dozen new images. I believe this is just a time out as it loads the images and that it does not need to reload the images each time. So subsequent posts fix this. I have not been able to find a place to increase the time out. So my solution is to be patient and post the post again.

Technorati Tags: Timed Out,Windows Live Writer,Blogger,Aborted

simplespiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06199801103545676881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76153604311596173.post-64862751564538932602015-05-06T19:11:00.001-07:002015-05-06T19:11:04.266-07:00Virtual Box Clone Instance.
Once you have a solid instance of the OS you want there is no reason to reinstall it again.
